elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Estonian Society of Toxicology was established at October 17th 1997 with a goal to\nconnect everyone interested in toxicology as well as students and those working\nwithin the field of toxicology.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-674 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/ets.konnaelu.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ETS171097.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"513\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ETS171097.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ETS171097-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ETS171097-768x492.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The driving force behind the establishment of Estonian Society of Toxicology was the friendly cooperation and exchange of information that began at the Finnish-Estonian Toxicologists Congress held in Tartu from May 22 to 24, 1997, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toksikologit.fi\/\">Finnish Society of\nToxicology<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The main objective of Estonian Society of Toxicology (EST) is to unite people working\nin the field of toxicology, acquire and disseminate information needed by its members\n(conferences, scholarships, grants, etc.), develop collaboration with toxicology\nsocieties in other countries, and organize scientific conferences, courses, and\ntoxicology-related training. As of January 2025, EST has 74 members. In the summer\nof 1998, EST became a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurotox.com\/\">EUROTOX<\/a>(Federation of European\nToxicologists and European Societies of Toxicology), and in November 2004, a\nmember of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iutox.org\/\">IUTOX<\/a>(International Union of Toxicology).<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Toxicology is the science of the harmful effects of chemicals on living organisms,\nincluding humans. Harmful chemicals or those present at harmful concentrations can\nbe found in the surrounding environment, workplaces, food, etc. Therefore,\ntoxicological research is of fundamental importance for developing Estonia&#039;s\nsustainable development strategy. Since toxicology is a highly interdisciplinary\nscience, combining knowledge and experts from biology, chemistry, medicine,\nphysiology, and other fields, the exchange of information among these individuals is\nextremely important. This enables effective collaboration and, consequently, better\noutcomes. Cooperation and information exchange are particularly crucial in Estonia,\nwhere research resources are limited.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Society&#039;s first major endeavor was organizing the joint conference of the\nScandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology and the Estonian Toxicology Society\n(SSCT&amp;ETS\u201998).<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-696 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/ets.konnaelu.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/participants_1998-1024x774.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/participants_1998-1024x774.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/participants_1998-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/participants_1998-768x580.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/participants_1998.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The conference was held at the Institute of Chemical Physica and Biophysics in\nTallinn from October 23\u201326, 1998. Despite being a joint conference of two societies,\nits participants were truly international: 86 attendees from a total of 17 countries.\nAbout half of the participants were from Estonia. In addition to Estonians, there were\nattendees from the Baltic states and Eastern Europe. The exhibition featured nine\ncompanies. The main themes of the conference were in vitro toxicology, biochemical\ntoxicology, ecotoxicology, and environmental risk assessment.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">On April 25, 2003, a seminar titled Good Laboratory Practice was organized under\nthe Society&#039;s initiative, with support from IUTOX and the <a href=\"https:\/\/kbfi.ee\/\">Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics.<\/a> The lecturer was Dr. Andrew Waddell (Managing Director, TOWER MAINS LIMITED). Participants of the seminar can be seen in the photograph.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-699 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/ets.konnaelu.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GLP_group.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"970\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GLP_group.jpg 970w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GLP_group-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ets.kbfi.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GLP_group-768x453.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Members of our Society were actively involved as both organizers and participants in\nthe Btox program, established by Uppsala University in Sweden. The Estonian\ncoordinator of the project was Dr. Karin Hellat, a member of our Society. The goal of\nthe program was to improve toxicology training in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The\nprogram included both short toxicology courses and opportunities to complete a\ntoxicology\u00b4s master program.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">From October 20\u201323, 2005, the Estonian Toxicology Society once again organized a\njoint conference (ETS &amp; SSCT\u201905) with the Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology.\nThis time, the conference was held in Toila, with 80 participants from 17 countries.\nThe main topics of the conference included in vitro toxicity testing and 3R,\nalternative methods for toxicity testing (e.g., QSAR, ecotoxicological tests, and 3R),\ncell toxicology and toxicity mechanisms, the development of new regulatory toxicity\ntests, in vitro neurotoxicology, new in vitro bioanalysis methods, environmental\npollution and ecotoxicology, environmental pollution and risks to humans, and\ntoxicology education in Estonia.
